Miro for the win!

Updated: Sep 21, 2022

Miro is one of the many collaboration tools endorsed by NUS’s BL2.0. I previously knew it to be a brainstorming tool but only realized today that it also supports collaboration by allowing screen sharing, voting, mouseover collaboration (most other platforms can't do this!), embedded video, chat and comments, etc. To top it off, it has tons of ready made templates, which you can build upon right away. I was quite blown away...

Something fun I learnt today is brainwriting and the 6-3-5 rule. Never heard of it? Neither have I! Basically, it's a simple rule that helps brainstorming. Especially useful for introverts like myself. It goes like this, you get 6 people to share 3 ideas within 5 minutes. Repeat the process. Each time building upon others’ ideas. Many other tools can be used for brainwriting, but Miro makes it really easy.

I was previously using Coggle because it was easy to use and free. After trying out Miro, it's safe to say that it's actually more intuitive than coggle. If you work in an education institution, sign up for their education account (free) and gain access to even more functionality.

A little late to the party but am enjoying how flexible Miro is as a tool and how it can be used to support teaching and learning. E.g. Faculty can use Miro to create and share whiteboards, presentations, assignments, hold voting sessions, give reactions, etc. all within the same tool! Lots of deep dive opportunities for NUS faculty to do with their students.

If you are keen to learn more, check out tutorials on YouTube or this short Linkedin Learning course “Miro for UX: Brainstorming and Collaboration” (assuming your company/institution has subscribed to LiL). Alternatively, you can check out their blog to learn best practices on how to use this innovative tool to enhance your students’ learning experience.

Note: If you are a NUS faculty / student, you can reach out to NUS’s own digital-enablement team via CCEBX240@nus.edu.sg. And should you be keen in co-creating new modules or enhancing your current ones, feel free to reach out to BL2.0 Project managers / coordinators. We can collaborate through Miro! Trust me, I got Miro-certified badge and certificate from Linkedin-Learning one... :)
